Tokyo-bound inaugural class of Olympic skateboarders announced

Team USA stars Nyjah Huston, Heimana Reynolds and Mariah Duran join strong squads from Japan and Brazil among the 80 athletes set to roll in the first-ever Olympic Skateboarding Competition at the Tokyo 2020 (in 2021) Games.

The 80 athletes who’ll take part in the first-ever Olympic skateboarding competition at Tokyo 2020 (in 2021) are now known. With 20 skateboarders each in the men’s and women’s park and street disciplines, the competition will see 18 different countries represented (in street) and 17 (in park).

Among the biggest names heading to Tokyo are world number-one ranked men’s street and park specialists Nyjah Huston and Heimana Reynolds (both from Team USA).

Zion Wright, who put in a scintillating performance at the Dew Tour event in Iowa last month, 2021 women’s national champion street skater Mariah Duran, Bryce Wettstein and Brighton Zeuner (both women’s park) will also represent Team USA as part of a strong core of American talent with high hopes of grabbing gold.

Brazil and Japan will arrive with strong teams in Tokyo too.

The Brazilian women’s street trio of Pamela Rosa, young phenom Rayssa Leal and veteran icon Leticia Bufoni are up among the favourites.

Japan’s HORIGOME Yuto and SHIRAI Sora (men’s street), NISHIMURA Aori (women’s street) and OKAMOTO Misugu and YOSOZUMI Sakura (women’s park) are among an impressive Team Japan who'll be eager to bag some medals as hosts of the historic competition.

The best of the rest

From elsewhere in the world of skateboarding, Belgium’s silky Axel Cruysberghs and France’s hard-charging Aurelien Giraud (both men’s street) are in position to contend for podium places – as is Oskar Rozenberg of Sweden (men’s park). Young Sky Brown of Team GB (women’s park) and Roos Zwetsloot of the Netherlands (women’s street) will also head to Tokyo with confidence high after impressive performances in recent competitions

The inaugural Olympic skateboarding competitions will take place between 25 and 26 July (street) and 4 and 5 August (park) on the scenic shores of Tokyo Bay at the Ariake Urban Sports Park.
