Tokyo Olympics: Brigid Kosgei vs Ruth Chepngetich in women’s marathon, watch live

It will be Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei vs countrywoman Ruth Chepngetich at the Tokyo Olympics when the women’s marathon gets underway at the Sapporo Odori Park on Saturday, August 7.

Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei is the two-time Chicago Marathon (2018 and 2019) and two-time London Marathon winner (2019 and 2020). The 27-year-old holds the world record at 2:14:04 set at the 2019 Chicago Marathon.

Ruth Chepngetich, also from Kenya, is the reigning world champion. In April this year, Ruth set a new world record for half marathon after winning the Istanbul Half Marathon with a time of 1:04:02. In a marathon, Ruth’s personal best stands at 2:17.08.

World championship bronze medallist and world No. 11 Helalia Johannes of Namibia, European champion Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel and USA’s Sally Kipyego, a 10,000m silver medallist at London 2012 Olympics**,** will also be in the fray.

The Olympics record of 2:23:07 stands in the name of Ethiopia’s Tiki Gelana from the London 2012 Olympics.

The race will feature 88 runners. The Olympics women’s marathon will take place on Saturday, August 6 at 3:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
