The medal races for the sailing men’s laser standard and the women’s laser radial classes will be held at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour in the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.

Australian sailor Matt Wearn has already won the gold medal before the final in the men’s laser standard class.

According to the sailing rules, points earned in the medal race are doubled and added to the overall net total scored by the sailors in the qualifying races. The podium places are decided by the total net score after the medal race and not by finishing positions.

Matt Wearn scored a nett total of 49 in the qualifying rounds and even if he finishes 10th and last in the medal race - his total can only go up to 69.

Norway’s Hermann Tomasgaard was placed second with a nett total of 71 after the qualifying races and cannot overhaul Matt Wearn even if he wins the medal race.

However, the race for the gold medal is on between the top four in the women’s laser radial class.

Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom sits top after qualifying with a nett total of 64 while Dutchwoman Marit Bouwmeester is second with 71.

Josefin Olsson of Sweden (79 nett) and Canada’s Sarah Douglas (82 nett) are some way back but could challenge for the gold.

Indian Olympic debutants Vishnu Saravanan failed to make the final in the men’s laser standard after finishing 20th overall while Nethra Kumanan finished 35th overall in the women’s laser radial.
