Tokyo Olympics, sailing final: Men’s 49er - watch live
The New Zealand pair of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have a shot at history in the final of the men’s 49er at Tokyo 2020. Watch Olympic sailing live!
The men’s 49er event at the Tokyo Olympics is set for a close finish with the top three pairs in with a chance of a gold medal on Monday.
At the Enoshima Yacht Harbour, defending champions Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand will have to keep their nearest rivals from Great Britain and Spain in check given that double points are on offer in the medal round.
As per sailing rules, points secured in the medal round are doubled and added to the net score from the qualifying races to decide the podium places.
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have earned 52 net points so far while the British pair of Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell are a close second with 56 net points.
Though the Spanish pair of Diego Botín and Iago López too have 56 net points, they occupy the third spot heading into the medal round due to their inferior total points.
Points in sailing are awarded based on the ranking of a team in every race. While the first placed duo gets one point, the second is awarded two points and so on.
The total points in an event accounts for the score in all the races while the net point is calculated by discarding the team’s worst performance across rounds.
The Indian 49er duo of KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar finished their debut Olympics campaign in 17th out of 19 teams in the qualifying rounds. Top 10 pairs after 12 rounds of qualification make the medal race.
A win for Peter Burling and Blair Tuke on Monday will make them the most successful Kiwi sailors, eclipsing the great Barbara Kendall. Kendall won the sailboard gold at the 1992 Games in Barcelona then followed it up with a silver at Atlanta 1996 before signing off with a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have so far won a silver medal at London 2012 and gold at the Rio Games five years ago.
