History repeats in Tokyo 2020: It’s Mexico vs Japan for bronze in Olympic men’s football - watch live

The men’s football teams of Mexico and Japan have the last chance to earn a medal when they clash for the bronze at the Saitama Stadium on Friday, August 6.

Interestingly, Japan won their last Olympic medal in football in 1968 when they beat hosts Mexico for the bronze. The hosting duties have reversed this time, but the colour of the medal they are contesting for remains the same.

At Tokyo 2020, Japan overcame New Zealand in the quarter-final via a penalty shootout whereas London 2012 gold medallists Mexico trounced South Korea to book a spot in the last four.

However, in the semi-final, the Mexico football team held defending champions Brazil in regulation time but missed two penalties to go down 4-1 in the shootout. Meanwhile, Japan also fought well in the 90 minutes against Spain but a late goal from Asensio knocked them out of contention.

The Japan football team prevailed 2-1 the last time it met Mexico (in the group stage).

Henry Martin, one of the three overaged players in the Mexican team, and Sebastian Cordova are the top scorers for the South American side while Takefusa Kubo leads for Japan. All three have netted thrice at Tokyo 2020.
