Rio 2016 winners Brazil have the chance to become only the fifth nation to successfully defend the Olympics men’s football title when they go up against Spain in the Tokyo 2020 gold medal match at the International Stadium Yokohama on Saturday evening.
Great Britain (1908 and 1912), Uruguay (1924 and 1928), Hungary (1964 and 1968) and Argentina (2004 and 2008) have been the countries that have won successive Olympic titles before.
In the semi-final, the Brazil men’s football team were held by Mexico in regulation time but came through 4-1 in the penalty shootout. Reinier, Bruno Guimarães, Gabriel Martinelli and Dani Alves scored for Brazil.
In the other semi-final, Spain were deadlocked too with Japan heading late into extra time but a 115th-minute strike from Asensio saw the Spaniards through to the final.
Spain’s previous Olympic men’s football medal was a silver at Sydney 2000 when they went down to Cameroon in the penalty shootout. They have won the title once, defeating Poland at Barcelona 1992.
At Tokyo 2020, Richarlison has scored the most goals (five) for Brazil, while Rafa Mir has slotted in the most (three) for Spain. Both teams have scored and conceded the same number of goals at the Tokyo Olympics so far: eight and three.
