Two-time Asian champion Pooja Rani of India will face Chinese boxer Li Qian in the quarter-final of the women’s 75kg (middleweight) division at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
While Pooja Rani is making her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Li Qian has already bagged the bronze at Rio 2016.
The 30-year-old Pooja, the reigning Asian champion, will have an uphill battle against Li Qian, having already lost to the Chinese twice. The latest defeat came at the Olympic qualification tournament in Amman, Jordan last year. Pooja lost 5:0.
Prior to that, Li Qian beat Pooja Rani 2:0 in the semi-finals of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
Fourth-seeded Li Qian, aged 31, is also the 2018 world champion, and a two-time Asian champion as well.
Li Qian dominated Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke to move into the quarter-finals while Pooja Rani outpunched Ichrak Chaib of Algeria by unanimous decision to book a place in the last eight.
Current world champion and top seed Lauren Price of Great Britain has also confirmed a quarter-final spot and will be up against former South American Games champion Atheyna Bylon.
The other quarter-final bouts include Olympic silver medallist Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands facing Tammara Thibeault from Canada and two-time world champion Zenfira Magomedalieva, representing ROC, taking on Rady Adosinda Gramane (Mozambique).
The Pooja Rani vs Li Qian Olympic boxing match will start at 3:36 PM IST on Saturday, July 31. All bouts take place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
