Tokyo Olympics: Ryan Crouser favourite to defend men’s shot put title - watch live in India
World and Olympic record holder Ryan Crouser will face a stiff challenge from world No. 2 Tomas Walsh. Watch the Olympics shot put final live!
World No. 1 Ryan Crouser of the USA is the overwhelming favourite for the Tokyo Olympics gold medal in the men’s shot put event at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday, August 5.
The 29-year-old Ryan Crouser is the reigning Olympic champion and set the world record of 23.37m at the US Olympic trials in June this year, beating Randy Barnes’ record of 23.12m, which stood for 31 years.
The American shot putter cruised through to the final after a 22.05m throw, comfortably the best of the field in qualifying. Ryan Crouser also holds the Olympic record of 22.52 - set enroute gold at Rio 2016 - and is looking good to break it at Tokyo 2020.
His compatriot, the Rio 2016 silver-medallist Joe Kovacs - who has the second-best throw of the year at 22.72 - will likely be his closest challenger.
New Zealand’s Tomas Walsh - the bronze-medallist at Rio 2016 and ranked world No. 2 - will be eyeing another Olympic medal. He threw 21.49m in qualifying and has the fourth-best throw (22.22m) in 2021.
India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor failed to make the men’s shot put final after finishing 24th in qualifying with a best throw of 19.99m. Only the top-12 go to the final.
