Tokyo Olympics: KT Irfan, Sandeep Kumar, Rahul Rohilla in men’s 20km race walk, watch live

KT Irfan will be carrying India’s hopes at the Sapporo Odori Park when the Tokyo Olympics men’s 20km race walk gets underway on Thursday, August 5.

The 31-year-old KT Irfan also competed at the London 2012 Games where he finished 10th, with a time of 1:20.21, which now stands as the second-best time recorded by an Indian. The two-time national champion could not qualify for Rio 2016 as he was injured.

Making his Olympic 20km race walk debut will be veteran Sandeep Kumar. He competed at Rio 2016 in the men’s 50km race walk, finishing 35th.

The 36-year-old Sandeep Kumar qualified for Tokyo 2020 with a new national record of 1:20.16 at the national championships in February, eclipsing KT Irfan’s efforts in London.

Rahul Rohilla came second at the national championships with a timing of 1:20.26 and will be eager to make his mark on Olympic debut.

Of the three Indians, Sandeep Kumar is the highest-ranked at world No. 42 while KT Irfan and Rahul Rohilla are world No. 77 and 78, respectively.

Local heroes - world No. 1 Toshikazu Yamanishi and world No. 8 Ikeda Koki will be contenders for the title.

Chen Ding of China holds the Olympic record with a time of 1:18:46, set at London 2012. Yusuke Suzuki of Japan holds the world record with 1:16:36, set at the 2015 Asian race walking championships in Nomi, Japan.
