India will field a depleted contingent at the Thailand Masters 2023 BWF Super 300 badminton tournament, which starts on Tuesday, with top singles players like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth opting to sit out the Bangkok meet.

Saina Nehwal was initially slated to open her campaign in women’s singles against Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt but pulled out at the last moment. PV Sindhu was not in the draw.

Malvika Bansod faces home favourite Ratchanok Intanon, the top seed, in the first round of the women’s singles main draw while only one of Anupama Upadhyaya and Ashmitha Chaliha can advance to the second round with the two slated to face each other in an all-Indian affair.

India’s top-ranked men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who missed the Indonesia Masters last week due to an injury to Satwik, were slated to return at Bangkok as the top seeds in the men’s doubles but pulled out at the last moment.

Mithun Manjunath, world No. 42, will be the best-ranked Indian in the men’s singles main draw followed by Kiran George at 43rd. Saina Nehwal’s husband Parupalli Kashyap, who has been out with an injury for a long time, also features in the qualifiers.

India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will start the tournament as the third-seeded women’s doubles pair and face Japan’s Rena Miyaura-Ayako Sakuramoto in the first round. A second-round clash against fellow Indians Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa may be on the cards for Gayatri and Treesa.

Teenage sensation Unnati Hooda will pair up with Palak Arora for the women’s doubles qualifiers.

Indian badminton players Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto are the eighth-seeds in the mixed doubles main draw.
