India’s Sumit Nagal will be up against world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles at the Ariake Tennis Park on Monday.
The 25-year-old Medvedev, representing Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), will be a clear favourite against Nagal in the second-round match.
Ranked second in men’s tennis, Daniil Medvedev is one of the top contenders for a podium finish at Tokyo 2020.
Nagal, now 23, is already relishing his Olympics dream run by recording India’s first win in men’s tennis singles at the Olympics since the 1996 Atlanta Games when Leander Paes won bronze.
Nagal beat Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4 in the first round on Saturday. Daniil Medvedev, meanwhile, upstaged Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6 (8) in his opening match.
Sumit Nagal, in his maiden Olympics, has managed to steal a few headlines in the last few years. In 2019, he took a set off Roger Federer at the US Open, his maiden Grand Slam. Last year at the US Open, he became the first Indian in seven years to make the second round of a Grand Slam.
Monday’s clash will be all about Nagal’s strength against Medvedev’s weakness. The Indian prefers to engage in net play and is comfortable with drop volleys, too. The Russian, however, is often uncomfortable with low balls, especially when they are short.
Nagal has a solid serve and a strong forehand with a lot of topspin. His backhand is fairly flat which turns rallies in his favour.
The duo will be playing each other for the first time. It will take place at the Ariake Tennis Park on court 1 where matches will start at 7:30 AM IST. Sumit Nagal vs Daniil Medvedev is the third match on the court.
