India’s top-ranked doubles player Rohan Bopanna reached the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters event in Toronto along with Croatia’s Ivan Dodig.

Bopanna-Dodig, seeded eighth at the tournament, defeated Simone Bolelli and Maximo Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 on Wednesday evening. They will next take on the winner of the match between Rajeev Ram-Joe Sailsbury and Andrey Golubev-Andreas Mies.

Dodig, in the company of former US Open champion Marin Cilic, had won a silver medal in men’s doubles at Tokyo 2020. The final had been an all-Croatian affair with Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic defeating Cilic-Dodig 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old Bopanna is hoping to get his season back on track after narrowly missing out on Tokyo 2020 qualification. The Indian had a win-loss record of 9-16 so far this season and hasn’t won a double title yet.

He made it to the quarterfinals of the French Open in June, but hasn’t quite been able to make a mark at other major events. Bopanna had lost in the opening round of Wimbledon (with fellow Indian Divij Sharan) and that of the Australian Open (with Ben McLachlan).

Bopanna and World No. 11 Dodig teamed up for the first time this year at last week’s Washington Open. However, they came up against Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe, two established singles players, in the very first round. They were edged out 5-7, 6-1, 9-11.
