The business end of the 2024 Davis Cup Final 8 is here with the semi-finals of the men’s World Cup of tennis.
With the knockout stage well underway in Málaga, Spain, eight nations have been whittled down to four in the pursuit to become world champions.
All but one of the quarter-finals went the distance of three matches, including the opening tie, where Rafael Nadal bid farewell to the sport in an emotional final match.
Now, though, it is time to turn attention to the semi-finals and which two teams will book their place in the Davis Cup final on Sunday, 24 November.
Find out everything you need to know for the final four of the 2024 Davis Cup.
2024 Davis Cup Final 8 – semi-final lineup
The Netherlands were the first team to reach the semi-final, having already equalled their best Davis Cup campaign of 23 years prior.
Botic van de Zandschulp spoiled Nadal’s party with a straight sets win, before joining forces with Wesley Koolhof in the deciding match to send the Dutch through with a 2-1 victory.
Koolhof is also playing his final tournament before retirement, with the former doubles world number one putting in one of his finest career performances against Spain.
The Dutch team will face Germany - the only unbeaten nation remaining thanks to their 2-0 sweep of Canada - in an all-European final four clash.
Germany have looked good even without world no. 2 Alexander Zverev, with both singles players Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff commanding their matches and chasing Germany’s first Davis Cup since 1993.
In the other semi-final, 2023 finalists Australia remain in the mix thanks to a superb all-round team performance to defeat the USA 2-1. They have, in fact, reached the last two finals, so will be hoping there's some truth behind the idiom "third time's a charm."
Aussie singles player Thanasi Kokkinakis silenced the doubters with a stunning 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (14) win against American Davis Cup debutant Ben Shelton, prevailing with a thrilling 16-14 tiebreak.
The first all top-10 battle of the week between Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur was won by the former, forcing the Aussies to call upon trusted doubles pair Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson to see out the result and continue their European stay.
Australia will have a shot at revenge against defending champions Italy, after the latter defeated Argentina 1-2 in their quaterfinal tie.
Now, with Jannik Sinner as world number one, the Azzurri found themselves on the backfoot when Lorenzo Musetti lost the opening match 6-4, 6-1 to Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndulo.
However, once Sinner stepped onto the court, the dynamic transformed as he smashed Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-1, before stepping in once again for the doubles match alongside Matteo Berrettini and turning the tie around with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
