The Grand Slams may have concluded for the year, but the big tennis tournaments keep on coming with the 2024 Davis Cup Finals group stage (10-15 September).
Four groups across four cities determined who will qualify for the Final 8 knockout stage, to be held in Malaga from 19 to 24 November. The World Groups included defending Davis Cup champions Italy, who beat Australia 2-0 in the 2023 final.
Among the players and nations competing in the top tier of international tennis were Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Jack Draper with Great Britain.
The World Groups ran alongside the World Group I, which acts as a lower division of the Davis Cup to decide who will play in next year’s qualifiers. Novak Djokovic helped Serbia to return to the top flight, as he led his nation in the win against Greece.
Here are the key things you need to know about the group stage of the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, including results as they happen.
2024 Davis Cup Finals Group Stage: Format and all nations
The 16 teams in the group stage were divided into four groups of four, with the group winners and runners-up progressing to the knockout stage in Malaga.
Group A saw Italy in action in Bologna, but without US Open champion Jannik Sinner. Team captain Filippo Volandri announced the joint decision the day before Sinner’s Grand Slam triumph, in order to allow the world number one to rest. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini led the Squadra Azzurra.
Spain hosted Group B in Valencia and accomplished their mission of returning to play on home soil in two months’ time. Home hero Alcaraz, the Paris 2024 men’s singles silver medallist was back on the Davis Cup stage for the first time in two years.
The only group not being played in Europe was Group C, hosted in the Chinese city of Zhuhai. Number four seed Germany and record champions USA advancd to the final.
Group D was anyone’s for the taking in Manchester. Canada, led by Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Argentina made it through while hosts Great Britain could not take advantage of playing on home soil.
