Team GB win gold in men's 4x200 freestyle relay

Team GB topped the 4x200m relay today and eclipsed favourites USA to win the nation's third swimming gold at Tokyo 2020 whilst also setting a new European record of 6:58.58.

Whilst the USA's Kieran Smith made a strong start in the opening leg of the race and outswum Dean, Guy and Richards built a lead in their legs giving Scott enough momentum to pull away from the rest of the pack in the last 100m metres of the race. Scott surged ahead and touched the wall first to help Team GB secure its first gold a century after it won the same event in London 1908.

This victory has been a long-time coming for Great Britain who have been a consistent podium finisher but never a gold medal holder in men's 4x200m freestyle relay. In Rio 2016, they claimed silver medal behind gold medallists Team USA.

Meanwhile, Mikhail Dovgalyuk touched the wall 3.23 seconds behind Team GB to secure ROC a second place in the finals whilst Australia took bronze.

There's more cause for celebration as two of Team GB's men's relay 4x200m freestyle relay team secured their second medal at the Games.

This is second gold medal for Dean who topped yesterday's 200m freestyle event and also Scott's first gold after winning silver in the same event behind Dean.

"Backing the boys for second gold, [there's] nothing I could have asked for," Dean told the press after the event.

Meanwhile, Richards thanked the rest of the team for this historic feat.

"The experience that I've gained is something that I'll take forward with me now in future races. And just [giving] a huge thanks to the other lads for helping us out.

"It's an incredible feeling. Pride is just the word that keeps coming to mind. I've never been so proud to be part of the team."
