Former world No. 1 Saina Nehwal will look for her season’s first title at the Taipei Open 2022 starting on Tuesday.
Saina Nehwal, a London 2012 bronze medallist, rolled back the years by getting the better of world No. 9 He Bing Jiao at the Singapore Open last week and making her first quarter-final of the year.

Saina Nehwal, 24th in the badminton world rankings, will take on Slovakia’s Martina Repiska in the opening round. Upcoming badminton player Malvika Bansod will also be in action.
However, Saina Nehwal could run into home favourite and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying, if both reach the semi-finals. Saina Nehwal had won the Taipei Open way back in 2008.
Saina Nehwal’s husband Parupalli Kashyap is seeded third while world No. 4 Chou Tien Chen is the top seed in the men’s singles. Mithun Manjunath, who upset Kidambi Srikanth in the opening round of the Singapore Open last week, is also competing at the event.
India’s Thomas Cup hero HS Prannoy and Commonwealth Games-bound shuttlers PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen have skipped the Taipei Open.
India’s top men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have also given the Taipei Open a miss to prepare well for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham, UK, from July 28 to August 8.
The Taipei Open 2022 will be held at Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium till July 24. The event is returning to the BWF calendar after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
