Just two tournaments remain on the World Table Tennis series calendar for the 2023 season: the WTT Finals, separate events for women and men.
This week, the best 16 women's singles players and top eight women's doubles pairs in the rankings will gather in Nagoya, Japan, from 15–17 December to duke it out in the WTT Finals Women, aiming to be crowned the 2023 Finals champion.
Sun Yingsha, the dominant singles world number one, is the defending champion from last year's WTT Cup Finals, while this is the first year the doubles players have had a season-ending tournament under the WTT banner.
The last doubles champions in a season-ending event were Kihara Miyuu and Nagasaki Miyu of Japan – this year's sixth seeds – at the 2019 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals.
Players to watch at WTT Finals Women 2023
It's hard to look past Sun Yingsha from walking away with the title again. She has won six singles crowns this year, including the two major championships – the World Championships and Asian Games – and the Singapore Smash.
Sun's 7400 ranking points put her far ahead of Chinese teammate Wang Manyu, sitting on 4082. The People's Republic of China have seven singles players in the event, and will be difficult to beat.
Don't count out Hayata Hina, the home hope leading the Japanese players alongside Ito Mima and Harimoto Miwa. Others taking part include Republic of Korea's Shin Yubin, Germany's Ying Han, Puerto Rico's Adriana Díaz, and Romania's Bernadette Szocs.
Shin is also in doubles action alongside Jeon Jihee, and they are top seeds ahead of Chen Meng and Wang Yidi. Nagasaki and Kihara, having tasted Grand Finals victory in 2019 under the old World Tour format, will also look to make history as the first WTT Finals doubles winners.
