The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, India’s top T20 cricket domestic tournament after the Indian Premier League, is scheduled to be played from November 23 to December 15.

Started in 2007 as an Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament, the 2024 season will mark the 17th edition of the men's T20 cricket tournament with 38 teams in action.

Punjab, led by Abhishek Sharma’s player of the series performance, won their maiden title last year. Abhishek Sharma will captain the Punjab side for the 2024 edition. The defending champions are placed in Group A alongside Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Bihar.

The 38 teams have been divided into five groups. Groups A, B and C consist of eight teams while Groups D and E comprise seven teams each.

  • Group A: Bengal, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Bihar
  • Group B: Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Saurashtra, Karnataka, Tripura, Baroda, Sikkim, Uttarakhand
  • Group C: Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh
  • Group D: Assam, Railways, Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Pondicherry, Chandigarh
  • Group E: Mumbai, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Services, Nagaland

Each team will play the other teams in its respective group in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockouts.

The five table toppers, along with the best second team from across groups based on points or Net Run Rate, will qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The remaining four second-placed teams will play in the pre-quarterfinals.

Tamil Nadu are the most successful team in the competition’s history with three titles.

This year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy also features a host of high-profile Indian cricket stars, who will look to prepare for the Indian Premier League 2025 season.

Baroda, who finished runners-up last year, will feature Hardik Pandya and his elder brother Krunal Pandya in the side. Indian bowling spearhead Mohammed Shami, returning after a long injury layoff, will represent Bengal.

Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi are in the Gujarat squad while Haryana will have Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel and Mohit Sharma.

Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson, who hit two centuries each in the South Africa series earlier this month, will lead Hyderabad and Kerala, respectively.

Ishan Kishan (Jharkhand), Asian Games gold medal-winning captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (Maharashtra), Shreyas Iyer (Mumbai), Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Shardul Thakur (Mumbai), Ramandeep Singh (Punjab) and Arshdeep Singh (Punjab) will be among the top IPL players in action at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024.
