India’s Atanu Das won the bronze medal in the men’s recurve event at the Swiss Open 2024 archery competition in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday.

With Deepika Kumari and the other Indian compound archers drawing a blank at the Lausanne meet, which kicked off the 2025 Indoor Archery World Series, Atanu’s bronze proved to be India’s only medal from the event.

Atanu Das, a two-time Olympian, beat Tokyo 2020 champion Mete Gazoz of Turkiye 7-3 in the quarter-finals before losing in the semis to French archer Romain Fichet by a 4-6 scoreline to enter the bronze medal playoff.

In the medal contest, the Indian archer beat Switzerland’s Thomas Rufer 6-4 to land on the podium.

Atanu had earlier finished 11th in the qualifiers before beating Canada’s Alexandre Desemery (7-1) and the USA’s Nicholas D’Amour (6-4) in his opening two rounds of the Lausanne archery competition.

Aditya Wadhwa, meanwhile, failed to make it past the opening round in the men’s recurve competition.

Atanu’s wife and three-time Olympian Deepika Kumari’s challenge in women’s recurve, however, folded in the quarter-finals following a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Serbian archer Denisa Barankova.

None of the Indian compound archers in action at Lausanne managed to make it past the quarter-finals. In the men’s competition, Uday Kamboj bowed out in the final eight after Simranjot Singh was ousted in the second round.

In the women’s bracket, Muskan Kirar and Avneet Kaur exited in the second round while Jayshree Jaykumar’s challenge ended in the first round.
