SUSAKI Yui has won the host nation’s fourth gold medal in women’s wrestling at Tokyo 2020 after defeating People’s Republic of China’s SUN Yanan 10-0. The victory equals the gold medal haul won by the host nation’s women wrestlers at Rio 2016.

The 22-year-old Asian champion and two-time world champion won the bout without conceding a point to the Rio 2016 bronze medallist, just like she had done throughout the tournament. In the semifinal she brushed off Rio 2016 silver medallist, Azerbaijan’s Mariya Stadnik 11-0, and in the earlier rounds Ecuador’s Lucia Yepez Guzman 10-0 and Mongolia’s Namuuntsetseg Tsogt Ochir 10-0.

Speaking later a disappointed Sun said: "I feel regret because I haven't performed as well tonight as in the previous rounds. I feel I'm well prepared mentally and physically, but I didn't grab the chance tonight." And on her future as a wrestler, she added: "I see the Olympic Games as my last competition."

The match was also the last in the wrestling competition, which was held at the Makuhari Messe Hall.

The first of the two bronze medal matches was won by Azerbaijan's Mariya Stadnik, who goes into the record books as the first athlete representing her country to collect more than three Olympic medals. Her 10-0 win against Tsogt Ochir was her fourth podium finish in four Olympics: silver at Rio 2016 and London 2012, and bronze at Beijing 2008. The second bronze was awarded to USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt who beat Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 12-1.
