Super Bowl 2024: Kansas City Chiefs edge out San Francisco 49ers in epic 25-22 overtime win
The NFL’s showpiece lived up to its billing as the Chiefs clinched their third title in five years. Pop superstar Taylor Swift was in the stands cheering on her boyfriend Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The Kansas City Chiefs staged an amazing second-half comeback to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime on Sunday (11 February), clinching their third Super Bowl title in five years.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw the winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman in the final three seconds in overtime to deliver a thrilling finish to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.
This year’s NFL championship title decider was touted as the biggest game in history, and the action lived up to its billing.
Superstar singer Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, watched on from the stands after flying in from Tokyo where she had given a concert on Saturday night.
The 49ers took control of the game in the second quarter, opening a 10-0 advantage to take a 10-3 lead into the break.
But the Chiefs never stopped believing. The defending champions clawed their way back into the game, getting their first lead at 13-10 in the third quarter.
San Francsico answered with a 75-yard drive and a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Jauan Jennings at the end of that quarter. The 49ers were up again: 16-13.
49ers kicker Jake Moody then missed the extra point which meant that Kansas City only needed a field goal to tie the game. And that was exactly what Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker provided. 16-16.
It became a battle of the kickers as Moody redeemed himself, nailing a 53-yard field goal to give his team a 19-16 lead with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
But Butker steppd up and converted a 29-yard field goal with just three seconds on the clock.
Overtime.
Moody opened overtime with a field goal before Mahomes ended the drama in style, making the Chiefs the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots in 2005.
"The Chiefs are never underdogs," said Mahomes, who was voted MVP of the Super Bowl. "The guys never faltered. I'm so proud of my guys man, this is awesome, it's legendary."
"It's the start of (a dynasty), we're not done."
