Top Indian badminton players, including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy, will be in action at the Sudirman Cup 2023 from May 14 to 21 in Suzhou, China.
India qualified for this year’s competition after winning the bronze medal in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023 in February. India never won a medal at the Sudirman Cup. Quarter-final finishes in 2011 and 2017 are India’s best results in the biennial mixed-team badminton event.
However, India have shown a penchant for doing well in team championships of late. Notably, the men’s team won a historic Thomas Cup title last year while the mixed teams won a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and followed up with a bronze at the Asian mixed team championships this year.
The Indian badminton team will look to carry forward this momentum to clinch a maiden podium finish at the Sudirman Cup this year in China. All matches of the Sudirman Cup 2023, the 18th edition of the badminton tournament, will be live streamed in India.
Sixteen nations will be competing for the title this year. The teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group progress to the knockouts.
India are placed in a difficult Group C alongside Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Australia. The Indian badminton team will open its campaign against Chinese Taipei on Sunday.
The tie may see PV Sindhu face off against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medallist, in the opening encounter. A former world No. 1, Tai Tzu Ying holds a 17-5 head-to-head record against PV Sindhu.
India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also be in focus. The pair is ranked fifth in the recently released BWF world rankings and won the Badminton Asia Championships 2023 men’s doubles crown last month.
In the women’s doubles, the Indian team will be represented by Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, who reached the semi-finals of the All England Open 2023.
Hosts China, record 12-time Sudirman Cup champions, are placed in Group A with Denmark, Singapore and Egypt.
The Sudirman Cup 2023 also kickstarts the badminton qualification window for the Paris 2024 Olympics and points earned at the tournament will count towards the players' Road to Paris rankings.
