New Spanish tennis ‘king’ Carlos Alcaraz shares how it started following Wimbledon 2023 title win

Spanish media are praising the new Wimbledon champion following his epic five-set duel with Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz is the new ‘king’ of tennis according to Spanish media, and a day after his Wimbledon win the 20-year-old has been reflecting on his journey so far.

The 20-year-old Spaniard won a thrilling Wimbledon 2023 final against Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted four hours and 42 minutes.

Centre Court was full of celebrities and royals including Spain's King Felipe VI, who congratulated Alcaraz for claiming the Wimbledon crown, and they exchanged a few words with each other.

“King Felipe, I am really proud that you are here supporting me. I played in front of you twice, twice I won, I hope you are coming more!” Alcaraz said to his King during the post-match interview on court.

Spanish media were quick to crown Alcaraz the new ‘tennis king’ of Spain, with his victory dominating not just the sport sections but also the front pages of most newspapers on Monday.

How it started for Carlos Alcaraz

On his Twitter profile, Alcaraz shared on Monday (17 July) a photo of him as a child, playing in his hometown El Palmar in Murcia.

He added a photo alongside of him holding the Wimbledon trophy and a caption saying “How it started.. How it’s going” to show his journey to becoming two-time grand slam champion at the age of 20.

The Wimbledon victory has also secured Alcaraz a spot for the end of season men's tour finals. He also retains his first place on the men’s ATP ranking.
