Great Britain’s Mia Brookes landed a stunning third-run trick to claim a maiden FIS World Cup Big Air snowboard victory in Beijing, People's Republic of China on Sunday (1 December).

The youngest world champion in the history of snowboarding, Brookes opened the final with a back double 1260 weddle to put herself in podium contention with 85.75 points.

While the 17-year-old could not stick the landing on a cab 1440 stalefish on her second run, she succeeded on the third to earn the highest score of the competition. The 94 score launched Brookes to the top of the standings with a best two-run total of 179.75.

“I didn’t even plan on coming to win today," Brookes told FIS after. "I just wanted to land my new tricks and just to be here is so sick, and to win it is insane.”

Japan’s Fukada Mari finished second, scoring 176.75 points, with two-time Olympic champion Anna Gasser taking third with 169.00.

Ogiwara Hiroto was a model of consistency in the men's event and had the competition all but wrapped up by the time he set off down the ramp on his third run.

The Japanese rider trailed behind Italian star Ian Matteoli after the first run during which Matteoli landed the first-ever 2160 in competition – effectively six rotations – for a score of 97.75.

With the Italian unable to recreate this magic on his next two runs, Ogiwara capitalised on the opportunity, first landing a back 1800 indy and following that up with a front triple 1800 weddle. The combined total of 169.50 sealed him the victory.

Matteoli (165.50) finished in second place and local favourite Yang Wenlong (159.25) in third.
