The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan, the current women's 10,000m world champion on the athletics track, smashed the world record in the event by 10.63 seconds at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold FBK Games meet on home soil in Hengelo on Sunday (6 June).

Hassan, who was born in Ethiopia but has lived in the Netherlands since she was 16, clocked 29 minutes 6.82 seconds, breaking a record set by Almaz Ayana at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

It is, subject to World Athletics' usual ratification process, Hassan's fourth world record. She is already the world record holder over the mile and road 5 km (women's only) and in the one hour.

The Dutchwoman has trained under banned American coach Alberto Salazar, although Hassan has always insisted she is a clean athlete and believes Salazar.

Salazar is currently serving a four-year US Anti-Doping Agency suspension.

Also competing in Hengelo was the men's pole vault world record holder, Armand Duplantis.

The Swede cleared a world-leading 6.10m on his third and final attempt in the evening to leave him a clear winner, but Duplantis wanted more, raising the bar to 6.19m for three attempts at the world record.

He ran through on his first attempt and came up short of the bar on his second. On his final try, he took the bar down with him to leave his own existing mark at 6.18 untouched.
