Shubhankar Sharma finishes tied-14 at inaugural Cyprus Open golf
The Indian golfer was on song in the first two rounds but dropped off the pace to slip down the leaderboard over the weekend.
India’s Shubhankar Sharma carded a total of 13-under after four rounds to finish tied-14 at the Cyprus Open golf tournament on Sunday.
Sharma’s score was seven shots behind England's Callum Shinkwin, who won the inaugural European Tour event played at the Aphrodite Hills Resort golf course in Paphos.
The 24-year-old Indian teed off in the fourth and final round tied-12 with a score of 11-under – three strokes behind round three leader Jamie Donaldson. Sharma was fantastic on the front nine, carding four birdies against a single bogey but was pegged back on the back nine.
He carded a birdie on the tenth but sunk bogeys on the 12th and 18th holes to end the final round with a score of two-under in the par-71 course.
Sharma had scored a two-under in the third round as well, sinking three birdies and a bogey – all on the back nine.
The two-time European Tour winner had earlier made the cut with nine-under after the first two rounds and was tied-sixth going into the weekend rounds. Sharma, however, couldn’t sustain the momentum in the final two days and slipped down the leaderboard.
Callum Shinkwin wins inaugural Cyprus Open
England’s Callum Shinkwin, meanwhile, clinched his maiden European Tour title after overcoming Finland’s Kalle Samooja via playoff after both golfers were tied at 20-under after the four rounds.
It was an enticing finish to the event with Shinkwin trailing Samooja by two-shots, heading into his final two holes. The Englishman stepped up with clutch birdies in both to force a playoff and eventually win the event.
South African golfer Garrick Higgo, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and Wales' Jamie Donaldson tied for third spot after finishing with 18-under scores.
