Deepak Kumar finished 26th and Divyansh Singh Panwar 32nd in the men’s 10m air rifle qualification round. The top eight advance to the final.
India’s Deepak Kumar and Divyansh Singh Panwar could not advance to the final of the men’s 10m air rifle at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.
The two had a below-par qualification round, with Deepak Kumar finishing 26th and Divyansh Panwar ending on the 32nd spot at the Asaka Shooting Range. Only the top eight shooters advance to the final medal round.
The 18-year-old Divyansh, who is second in the world rankings, managed a total score of 622.8 in his sixty shots. Deepak Kumar, meanwhile, was slightly better with 624.7 out of a possible 654.
China’s Yang Haoran smashed the Olympic record in qualifying with a 632.7 – 2.5 points more than the previous record – to top the 10m air rifle qualification.
USA shooters Lucas Kozeniesky (631.5) and William Shaner (630.8) finished second and third, respectively.
The eighth and last spot in the final was clinched by Sheng Lihao of China who scored 629.2.
Divyansh had a difficult start with a lowly 102.7 in his first series of 10 shots but improved in the next four with 103.7, 103.6, 104.6, 104.6 and ended with a 103.6.
Deepak also struggled in the beginning, scoring only 102.7. Scores of 103.8, 103.7, 105.2, 103.8 and 105.3 in the last five could not put him in the top eight that advanced to the final.
The top shooters averaged over 105 in all six series.
