The Santosh Trophy 2022-23 concluded on March 4 with Karnataka beating Meghalaya in the final at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Started in 1942, the 2022-23 seasin was the 76th edition of India’s premier inter-state football tournament. Institutional teams like Services and Railways also compete in the Santosh Trophy, the official national championship of India. With 32 titles, West Bengal are the most successful team in Santosh Trophy history.
The preliminary stage of Santosh Trophy 2022-23 saw 36 states and Union Territories of India drawn into six groups of six teams each.
After facing each other in a single-legged round-robin format, the six group winners - Delhi, Kerala, Goa, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Punjab - and the three best runner-ups - Karnataka, Manipur and Maharashtra qualified for the final round of Santosh Trophy 2022-23.
Odisha, the hosts of the final round, earned an automatic berth while Services and Railways joined directly in the final round to make it a 12-team affair.
In the final round, the 12 teams were divided into two groups of six teams each.

The teams in each group faced each other in a single-legged round-robin format. The top two teams from each group - Punjab and Karnataka from Group A and Services and Meghalaya from Group B - made the knockout rounds, consisting of the semi-finals and the final.

This season, the Santosh Trophy knockout rounds are being played at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is the first time in the history of the tournament that matches will be held on foreign soil.
