A red-letter day for Indian sports, August 17 will always be remembered in celebration of Sakshi Malik’s bronze medal triumph at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The Haryana-born grappler created history on this day, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Summer Games.
And to mark the four-year anniversary of the landmark feat, Sakshi Malik will be joining the Olympic Channel to take fans through the story of her Rio triumph.
A gripping tale that changed lives
Sakshi Malik’s medal charge in the 58kg women’s category in Rio was a tantalizing affair, featuring multiple close come-from-behind victories by the Indian.
Perhaps the most thrilling of them was the bronze medal bout against the then reigning Asian champion Aisuluu Tynybekova. Up against the Kyrgyzstani wrestler, Sakshi was 5-0 down at one stage but fought back valiantly to win the bout.
During the interaction, Sakshi will take fans through the minute details of how she snatched away the victory from the jaws of defeat and clinched the medal.
“It was a life-changing moment to win a medal on a platform as big as the Olympics. I’m also proud of the fact that it inspired more women to take up the sport and brought a positive change in society,” Sakshi had told the Olympic Channel earlier.
Earlier this month, fans were treated to a similar personalised walkthrough of Leander Paes’ iconic 1996 Atlanta bronze medal by the Indian tennis ace himself as part of the Olympic Channel’s Great Olympic Moments program.
During the segment, Leander Paes narrated several intriguing nuggets about his moment of glory at Atlanta and fans can expect much of the same from Sakshi.
Where and when to watch Sakshi Malik relive her Rio glory
Fans in India can tune in at 11 am IST on Monday, August 17, on the Olympic Channel’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages for the stream featuring Sakshi Malik.
