Tokyo Olympian Nethra Kumanan will lead a 20-member Indian contingent at the Sailing World Championships 2023, to be held in Hague, the Netherlands starting Thursday. The Sailing World Championships 2023 will conclude on August 20.
The sixth edition of the Sailing World Championships will also be a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Around 1,200 sailors from over 80 countries will vie for 107 Olympic quotas on offer across 10 Olympic classes – windsurfing (men and women), kite (men and women), dinghy (men, women and mixed), skiff (men and women), and mixed multihull.
Both men’s and women’s windsurfing events in Hague will offer 11 quota places each. Similarly, the kite events will have eight quotas, dinghy 16 quotas and skiff 10 quotas for each gender. There will be eight and nine quota places up for grabs in mixed dinghy and multihull, respectively.
Tokyo Olympian Nethra Kumanan, who became the first Indian sailor to qualify directly for an Olympic event in 2021, will compete in women’s dinghy at the quadrennial meet.
Vishnu Saravanan, KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar – all part of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics – are also in India’s 20-member squad for the world championships.
Saravanan, an under-21 world championships bronze medallist, will compete in the men’s dinghy competition. KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar will represent India in the men’s skiff.
India will also see participation in windsurfing, kite and mixed multihull events – all Olympic disciplines.
The first edition of the Sailing World Championships was held in Cadiz, Spain in 2003 while the previous edition in 2018 took place in Aarhus, Denmark.
Great Britain’s tally of 23 medals is the highest at the sailing world championships. The Netherlands, however, have won eight gold medals, out of a total tally of 16, compared to Great Britain’s six. Indian sailors are yet to win a medal at the senior world championships.
