Six-time Olympic gold swimming medallist Ryan Lochte of the United States began to make his case for a fifth berth to the Olympic Games Wednesday afternoon (24 March) at the ISCA International Senior Cup in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The 36-year-old held off Caeleb Dressel in the 200m IM, posting a time of 1:59.72. Dressel, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, was close behind at 2:00.50. Grant Sanders was third, finishing at 2:02.69.
The result was a reversal from the morning heats where Dressel came out just ahead of Lochte: 1:43.16 to 1:43.91.
Lochte was also victorious in the 100m backstroke where he swam a 55.92 time. Lochte just out-touched Ziyad Saleem who finished at 56.06. Kaikea Crews finished third (56.34).
In the 50m butterfly final, Dressel came out on top with a 23.98 time. He set the American record in the event (22.35) at the 2019 World Championships. Joseph Schooling, who won the 100m butterfly for Singapore at Rio 2016, and Will Davis tied for second at 24.08.
