Two-time Olympic champions Fiji won the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens men's crown in Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday (11 September), as Australia picked up the women's title.

The New Zealand All Blacks 7s and Black Ferns 7s were the defending rugby sevens world champions from San Francisco 2018, and both reached their finals in South Africa. But the men's team were beaten 29-12 by Fiji in a repeat of the Olympic final at Tokyo 2020 in 2021. Fiji also won the Rio 2016 gold medal.

New Zealand are the women's Olympic champions but were beaten by Australia 24-22 in the world championship final, as the Rio 2016 champions got the better of their neighbours.
