Portland Track Festival 2024 athletics: Avinash Sable finishes second in first steeplechase race of the year

Sanjivani Jadhav won the women’s 10000m event while Parul Chaudhary finished third in women’s 3000m steeplechase.

India’s Avinash Sable finished second in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the Portland Track Festival 2024 athletics meet held at the Mount Hood Community College in Portland, USA on Sunday.

India’s Sanjivani Jadhav, meanwhile, won the women’s 10000m event while Parul Chaudhary finished third in the women’s 3000m steeplechase race.

In what was his first 3000m steeplechase race of the 2024 athletics season, Avinash Sable clocked 8:21.85 to finish behind the United States of America’s Kenneth Brooks (8:18.77). Another US athlete, Anthony Rotich, clocked 8:24.13 to take third place.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist competed in two events in California prior to the Portland meet but only ran in the 5000m and 10,000m events.

Sable, the reigning Asian Games champion, holds a personal best of 8:11.20 in 3000m steeplechase, which is also the standing Indian national record.

Asian Championships bronze medallist Sanjivani Jadhav finished first in women’s 10,000m after clocking 32:22.77, a shade under her personal best of 32:21.76 achieved in California back in March this year.

Kellyn Taylor of the USA finished second with 32:23.95 while Ethiopia’s Atsede Tesema took third place after clocking 32:24.43.

Reigning Asian Games champion Parul Chaudhary was also in action at the Portland meet. She finished third in the women’s 3000m steeplechase after clocking 9:31.38.

The time was a marked improvement from the 9:46.74 Parul managed at the Eugene Diamond League last month.

The 29-year-old Indian athlete is also the national record holder in women’s 3000m steeplechase after achieving the mark of 9:15.31 in Budapest last year.

Allie Ostrander of the USA won the event with a time of 9:24.70 while Pamela Kosgei of Kenya finished second after clocking 9:28.88. Priti Lamba of India finished 20th in the event, clocking 10:12.88.

India’s Kartik Kumar finished fourth in men’s 10000m with 28:14.67 while Abhishek Pal was 26th with a time of 29:41.74.

Sanjivani Jadhav is also slated to compete in the women’s 5000m high performance event on Monday while Abhishek Pal is on the entry list for the men’s race. Rahul and Sashi Singh will be in action in men’s 1500m.

India's Ankita and Gulveer Singh will take part in women’s and men’s 5000m hot window races respectively, while KM Deeksha is set to participate in women’s 1500m event.
