Mondo Duplantis: Will Olympic pole vault champ finally be on top of the world(s) in 2022?

There's one major title missing from the resume of Sweden's pole vault phenomenon Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis - World Championships gold. After soaring into Sunday's final, the 22-year-old has the chance to change that at the Track & Field Worlds in Oregon.

When it comes to the pole vault, Sweden's Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis has been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

Indoor and outdoor world record holder, Olympic champion, indoor world champion... the list goes on. But can Duplantis finally get the one medal missing from his trophy cabinet - an outdoor gold at the World Athletics Championships?

The time has come to answer after the Swede reached the final of the 2022 Track & Field Worlds in Oregon.

Like the great Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka before him, Duplantis often looks nothing short of invincible. In March of this year, he set a world record of 6.20m at the 2022 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade.

Then on 30 June, he beat his outdoor world record with a jump of 6.16m in Stockholm.

Now he will look to take that form into the World Championships final on Sunday (24 July), having sailed into the medal event with a jump of 5.75m in the qualification round on Friday.

Pole vault stars to watch at the Track & Field Worlds?

Because Duplantis has been nothing short of dominant over recent years - including a 15-meet winning streak since August 2021. It's easy to forget the depth of talent competing against him at these World Championships.

The USA's Chris Nilsen won silver at Tokyo 2020 in 2021 and is the only other athlete to have vaulted over six metres this year. He topped qualifying to comfortably reached the final in front of his home crowd and will be aiming to go one better than his second-place at last year's Olympic Games.

Oleg Zernikel of Germany was the only other athlete to qualify for Sunday's final by reaching the mark of 5.75m without a failed attempt in qualifying.

Also competing will be Brazil's 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz, who won silver in Tokyo, with London 2012 Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie of France also in the mix. They were fourth and fifth in qualifying.

One name sadly missing from the list is reigning and double world champion Sam Kendricks, who had surgery on his knee and will be unable to compete at his home championships in Oregon.

Asian record holder John Obiena of the Philippines also didn't compete and has to wait for the chance to become the first world medallist from his country.
