While two-time world medallists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier seek a third title this week at the Canadian Championships in Calgary, they're appreciating Gilles' health.
Gilles, 31, returns to her national championships after missing the 2023 edition as she underwent treatment for ovarian cancer.
"Missing it last year was, I think, pretty difficult for us," Gilles said, according to CBC. "I'm feeling so much better than last year. It's been a journey to finally feel like I'm back where I'm supposed to be."
The duo have had a successful 2023-24 campaign to this point, winning their two Grand Prix stops - in Canada and China - before claiming bronze at the Grand Prix Final.
Skating on their own terms this season, Gilles/Poirier have appeared refreshed – and ready to claim back their national title.
“I think we're in the era of, ‘Whatever Piper and Paul Want,’” an upbeat Gilles told Olympics.com earlier this season.
