Piotr Zyla of Poland was the surprise winner of the men’s individual normal hill title at the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany.

At 34, it is his first world championship win and he was joined by Polish teammates Dawid Kubacki and Kamil Stoch in a joyous celebration on the course.

Home favourite Karl Geiger, who was actually born in Oberstdorf, finished in second place.

Anze Lanisek of Slovenia finished in third.

Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud was the favourite after practice to win the normal hill World Championship title 2021.

But a slight tailwind affected his first jump and he eventually finished in fourth place.

On Thursday, Ema Klinec of Slovenia took gold in the women’s normal hill. Norway’s Maren Lundby took silver and Sara Takanashi finished in third.
