Peter Sagan is facing a setback on his road to his Paris 2024 MTB dream, as he has to undergo a heart procedure on Friday (23 February).

The Slovakian three-time road race world champion reached a heart rate of more than 200 bpm during a mountain bike race in Chelva near Valencia five days ago.

The cardiac arrhythmia requires an ablation procedure, which will be performed in Italy at the Lancisi university hospital in Ancona.

“We just decided to control the situation immediately so that we can be sure there’s nothing serious," a spokesperson for Sagan told GCN.

“It’s a routine thing to make sure there’s no stress or worries. He will stay off the bike for between five to eight days and that’s just to recover from the little surgery. So our plan is to race in Marseille in 20 days.”

Sagan has switched his focus to mountain bike from road racing ahead of the 2024 season with the aim to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris in cross-country.

The Slovak became junior cross-country world champion in 2008 before becoming professional on the road.

He has claimed the points classification of the Tour de France a record seven times.
