From 29 to 31 August, the Para taekwondo events at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will be held at the Grand Palais. In the iconic Parisian venue, the athletes in this discipline will be giving their all to win precious medals.

Where?

The 10 medal events will take place at the Grand Palais. During the Olympic Games, the Grand Palais hosted taekwondo and fencing, with Althéa Laurin winning gold and the 100% French sabre final between Manon Apithy-Brunet and Sara Balzer.

The athletes will be competing in bouts lasting just 5 minutes. Note that only kicks (direct = 2 points; spinning = 3 or 4 points) are scored.

Para taekwondo: a discipline structured into weight categories

What are the classification rules?

Athletes are classified in categories K41 to K44. However, only K43 and K44 athletes, grouped together in a single category, will be present at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The letter K stands for Kyorugi, or combat in French.

  • K43: double amputation of the forearms or equivalent limitation of abilities due to orthopaedic disability
  • K44: unilateral disability of an arm or equivalent limitation due to an orthopaedic disability or absence of toes significantly affecting the ability to move the legs dynamically.

Athletes compete together in different bodyweight categories:

  • -58 kg, -63 kg, -70 kg, -80 kg, +80kg for men
  • -47 kg, -52 kg, -57 kg, -65 kg, +65kg for women

Who?

Among the great medal hopefuls in the Para taekwondo events at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Bopha Kong (-58 kg), the local of the stage, seems to be the best chance for the French clan. A multiple international medallist and a legend in his discipline, he will be attempting to climb onto his first Paralympic podium three years after losing the bronze medal final at Tokyo 2020. The 3-strong French delegation is also highly ambitious, with Sophie Caverzan (-57 kg) and Djelika Diallo (-65 kg) also taking part.

Other athletes expected to shine at the Grand Palais include Silvana Mayara Cardoso Fernandes (-57 kg), Ziyodakhon Isakova (-47 kg), Asaf Yasur (-58 kg), Imamaddin Khalilov (-70 kg), Meryem Betul Cavdar (-52 kg), Beth Munro (-65 kg) and Guljonoy Naimova (+65 kg).
