Paris 2024 taekwondo: All results, as France’s Althea Laurin strikes gold in women's +67kg
A last-second high kick made all the difference for France’s Althea Laurin, who bettered her Tokyo 2020 bronze medal to make it gold at Paris 2024 on Saturday, 10 August with a 2-0 win in women's +67kg taekwondo over Uzbekistan's Svetlana Osipova, who finishes with silver.
In the earlier matches, the Republic of Korea's Lee Dabin won bronze 2-1 against Germany's Lorena Brandl and Türkiye's Nafia Kus Aydin beat Great Britain's Rebecca McGowan 2-1 to win the other bronze.
Laurin was thrilled to win gold in front of a home crowd at the Grand Palais. "I’m very happy to have won this first gold medal for French taekwondo," she said. "It’s incredible, all of this in front of all the French support. I could not do better. I’m not used to this public, so it was intense."
Laurin savoured the moment, raising her hands in celebration with the crowd. "Yes. I am Olympic champion," she said. "I had to absolutely mark this moment. It’s a strong moment. I couldn’t just stay still. I have to show this emotion."
This marks the final Olympic Games for Lee, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist who finished with bronze on Saturday. She said afterwards that the qualifying experience for Paris 2024 was a challenge: “I had a really hard and tough time."
She also said these would be her final Games.
"This is my final moment, my last Olympics to participate in," she said. "I'm happy because I already gained a bronze medal, and this is like a beautiful end."
