Paris 2024 Olympics tennis, India schedule: Rohan Bopanna, Sumit Nagal gear up for action at Roland Garros
Rohan Bopanna, N Sriram Balaji and Sumit Nagal will be the three Indian tennis players in action at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
While Bopanna and Balaji will pair up for the men’s doubles event at the iconic Roland-Garros Stadium, home to the French Open Grand Slam, Nagal will take guard in the men’s singles competition.
All three will be up against French opponents in their first-round encounters. While Bopanna-Balaji’s first test will be against Fabien Reboul/Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Sumit Nagal has been drawn against Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
Bopanna, who represented India at London 2012 and Rio 2016, will be making his return to the Olympic stage after missing out on Tokyo 2020. He is the oldest Indian competing at Paris 2024.
The Indian tennis veteran, memorably, narrowly missed out on the mixed doubles bronze medal at Rio with Sania Mirza. Bopanna has been in sensational form in the lead up to Paris 2024.
He won the Australian Open men’s doubles title earlier this year and rose to world No. 1 in the ATP doubles rankings, becoming the oldest man to achieve the feat at the age of 43.
Bopanna’s chosen partner Balaji, meanwhile, will be appearing in his maiden Summer Olympic Games and has impressed with his brand of aggressive tennis of late and has won four Challenger titles with German partner Andre Begemann since last year.
Sumit Nagal, who made it to the second round at his maiden Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020, will be returning for Paris 2024. It took a mammoth effort from Nagal to make his second Olympic team.
After an injury-riddled 2023, Nagal was 138th in the rankings in January 2024 and a shot at Paris 2024 looked improbable if not impossible. However, wins at the Chennai Open in February and Heilbronn Neckarcup in June saw him shoot up to 77th and punch a ticket to Paris at the 11th hour.
