India at Paris 2024 Olympics, Day 5, as it happened: Swapnil Kusale makes rifle final; Lovlina Borgohain wins opener

While Indian athletes did not feature in medal events on Wednesday, Swapnil Kusale delivered a noteworthy result at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 28-year-old shooter advanced to the men’s 50m 3 positions rifle final and has the opportunity to add to India’s medal tally on Thursday.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, however, failed to make the medal event. Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh’s women’s trap shooting campaigns also ended.

Lovlina Borgohain, a Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist in 69kg, excelled in her women’s 75kg round of 16 boxing bout. She is one win away from confirming a medal. Nishant Dev, on his Olympic debut, also marched to the quarter-finals.

PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy made the pre-quarterfinals in the badminton singles events.

Manika Batra’s historic table tennis singles campaign, however, came to an end in the pre-quarterfinals. Sreeja Akula, who replicated Batra’s achievement, won her round of 32 contest. But like Batra, Akula also stumbled in the round of 16.

Former world No. 1 archer Deepika Kumari bounced back from her disappointing women’s team campaign to win back-to-back matches in her individual archery event. She joined Bhajan Kaur in the pre-quarterfinals.

Tarundeep Rai, a four-time Olympian, could not replicate Deepika’s success, crashing out in the round of 64 individual match.

Anush Agarwalla, India’s first dressage equestrian in Olympic history, failed to make the individual grand prix final at Paris 2024. Rower Balraj Panwar also dropped out of medal contention.

Carlos Alcaraz-Rafael Nadal's Paris 2024 men’s doubles tennis campaign ends

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal lost 6-2, 6-4 against fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram of the USA in the men’s doubles quarter-final.

Krajecik-Ram forced the Spanish duo to 26 errors at the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Wednesday. The Spaniards also made 17 unforced errors, resulting in their downfall in the last eight at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Alcaraz and Nadal, who have won 26 Grand Slams in men’s singles between themselves, failed to replicate the magic in the doubles event.

Nadal crashed out of the men’s singles competition in Paris, earlier this week, after a blockbuster contest with top seed Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz, meanwhile, advanced to the men’s singles quarter-final after his win earlier today.

Table tennis: Sreeja Akula’s singles campaign ends

India’s Sreeja Akula went down to Sun Yingsha of the People’s Republic of China by a 12-10, 12-10, 11-8, 11-3 scoreline in the women’s singles round of 16 at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sun Yingsha, as a result, advanced to the quarter-finals.

Akula, seeded 16th, was outclassed by her Chinese counterpart for most of the match. Despite the Indian paddler taking a five-point lead in the second game, Sun Yingsha clawed back to save the game and dominated the rest of the contest. The top seed eventually won the pre-quarterfinal in just 38 minutes.

Sun Yingsha, a mixed doubles champion at Paris 2024, is yet to drop a game in her singles campaign in the French capital. She settled for the women’s singles silver at Tokyo 2020, losing to compatriot Chen Meng in the gold medal match three years ago.

After beating Akula, Sun Yingsha will continue her quest for a first Olympic gold medal in the women’s singles table tennis event.

The 26-year-old Akula, meanwhile, beat Zeng Jian of Singapore 4-2 earlier today in the round of 32. She is also only the second Indian table tennis singles player to make the pre-quarterfinal at the Olympics.

Boxing: Nishant Dev delivers big win on Olympic debut

Indian boxer Nishant Dev upstaged seventh seed Jose Gabriel Rodriguez Tenorio of Ecuador 3:2 in the men’s 71kg round of 16 bout at Paris 2024.

On his Olympic debut, the two-time national champion Nishant Dev progressed to the quarter-finals and is one win away from bagging his first medal at the Summer Games.

The Ecuadorian boxer, a Pan American Games silver medallist, lost the opening two rounds. While he mounted a comeback to win the third, it wasn’t enough to turn the result his way and Nishant Dev edged the thrilling bout.

At the Asian Games last year, the Indian boxer was knocked out in the quarter-finals.

Badminton: HS Prannoy joins Lakshya Sen in round of 16

India’s HS Prannoy beat Le Duc Phat of Vietnam 16-21, 21-11, 21-12 in the men’s singles Group K match. The 32-year-old shuttler’s second win at the Paris 2024 Olympics secured his passage into the pre-quarterfinals as the group winner.

Seeded 13th, Prannoy breezed past his unseeded Vietnamese opponent in 62 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena on Wednesday.

The Indian shuttler, who won the Asian Games bronze last year, unexpectedly went down in the first game. Prannoy, however, mounted a strong comeback and comfortably won the second and third games.

Earlier today, Lakshya Sen (men's singles) upstaged Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie 21-18, 21-12 while PV Sindhu (women's singles) won 21-5, 21-10 against Kristin Kuuba of Estonia. Both Indian shuttlers also advanced to the round of 16 at Paris 2024.

Archery: Four-time Olympian Tarundeep Rai loses round of 64 match

India’s Tarundeep Rai lost 6-4 against Tom Hall of Great Britain in the men’s individual round of 64 archery match at the Les Invalides.

Paris 2024 was Rai’s fourth Olympic Games, following Athens 2004, London 2012 and Tokyo 2020. His 2010 Asian Games silver was India’s first individual medal at the continental meet.

On Wednesday, the 40-year-old Rai was on the backfoot from the second set after a tied first. Hall, 33, bagged the second and fourth sets while the Indian archer could only get two points in the third.

The fifth and decisive set, meanwhile, was tied after both archers hit two 10s each.

Rai also featured in the men’s team event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where India lost 6-2 against eventual bronze medallists Turkiye.

Manika Batra’s historic TT singles campaign ends

Indian table tennis star Manika Batra lost 4-1 against Japan’s Miu Hirano in the women’s singles round of 16 match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

At the South Paris Arena on Wednesday, the eighth-seeded Hirano won 11-6, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-6 after 47 minutes and advanced to the quarter-final.

Batra, meanwhile, ended a historic campaign in the French capital. She is the first Indian table tennis singles player to make the pre-quarterfinals in Olympic history.

On the other hand, Hirano has won a Summer Games silver and two Youth Olympics silver medals.

Seeded 18th, the 29-year-old Indian paddler beat France’s Prithika Pavade, a higher-ranked opponent, and Anna Hursey from Great Britain in the previous rounds. Batra had exited at the round of 32 stage at Tokyo 2020.

The birthday girl and fellow Indian paddler Sreeja Akula, at 12:30 AM tonight (Thursday), will face top seed Sun Yingsha of the People’s Republic of China in her women’s singles pre-quarterfinals.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Tai Tzu-ying exits Paris 2024 in group stage

Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-ying, seeded third, crashed out of the Paris 2024 Olympics badminton competition on Thursday. The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist lost 21-19, 21-15 to Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon at the La Chapelle Arena today, confirming her exit.

Tai Tzu-ying, who has been the women's singles world No. 1 for 213 weeks, defeated PV Sindhu in the Olympics semi-final three years ago.

Despite winning multiple titles in the BWF World Tour, Olympic and World Championship gold medals have eluded the 30-year-old shuttler.

Snoop Dogg at the Paris 2024 Olympics: Rapper turned broadcaster in French capital

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, commonly known as Snoop Dogg, has been a popular figure at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

A USA-based rapper, Snoop Dogg was a part of the Torch Relay at the Opening Ceremony of the ongoing Summer Games. He carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Saint-Denis.

During the USA vs the People’s Republic of China men’s doubles badminton match on Sunday, the 52-year-old turned into a broadcaster. He was present to watch gymnast Simone Biles, the most decorated artistic gymnast in history, too.

Snoop Dogg, interestingly, has his personalized Olympic pin.

He also met former world No. 1 tennis player Billie Jean King. She is a 39-time Grand Slam champion - 12 in singles, 16 in women’s doubles, 11 in mixed doubles. Snoop Dogg and King, incidentally, were both born in Long Beach, California.

Satwik-Chirag vs Chia-Soh in men’s doubles badminton quarters

World No. 3 badminton pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are drawn against Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the men’s doubles quarter-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Indian pair got the better of their Malaysian counterparts in the Asian Games semi-finals last year en route to their title. Chia-Soh, notably, were the bronze medallists at Tokyo 2020.

The Satwik-Chirag vs Chia-Soh men’s doubles badminton quarter-final will take place tomorrow (August 1).

If they win on Thursday, the 2022 Commonwealth Games champions will take on either top seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang from the People’s Republic of China or Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia in the semi-final.

Satwik-Chirag, incidentally, won in straight sets against the Indonesian pair in straight games earlier today.

Second seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (DEN) along with Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae (KOR), the fourth seeds, are in the other half of the draw.

Equestrian: Anush Agarwalla fails to make dressage individual grand prix final

The rider-mount duo of Anush Agarwalla-Sir Caramello Old finished ninth in Group E of the dressage individual grand prix qualifiers at Paris 2024.

Agarwalla, India’s only equestrian in Paris, scored only 66.444% at the Chateau de Versailles on Wednesday. His score, also short of the other top six athletes in overall qualification, meant the end of his debut Olympic campaign.

The 24-year-old was the first Indian to compete in dressage at the Summer Games.

Score: Equestrian Anush Agarwalla (IND) finishes ninth in Group E of the dressage individual grand prix qualifiers, scoring 66.444% of the points.

Birthday girl Sreeja Akula ‘happy’ after making pre-quarters

On Wednesday, Sreeja Akula became only the second Indian table tennis singles player to make the pre-quarterfinal at the Olympics. She followed Manika Batra, who scripted history on Monday night.

Akula, celebrating her 26th birthday today, beat Zeng Jian of Singapore 4-2 at the South Paris Arena.

“I am very happy that I played really well. Initially, I made a few unforced errors, but gradually as the game progressed I was totally focused and went into the match,” said India’s top-ranked table tennis singles player. “I’m happy I did my best.”

With a heavy Indian fanbase cheering her on, Akula managed to keep the Singaporean paddler at bay. She will now take on top seed Sun Yingsha at 12:30 AM tonight (Thursday).

“I’m not used to playing in this atmosphere. It’s really good that the crowd is so enthusiastic and it made me feel really motivated. I enjoyed it a lot,” added Akula.

Seeded 18th at Paris 2024, Batra, meanwhile, will face Japan’s Miu Hirano tonight at 8:30 PM IST. Hirano is an Olympic silver medallist and has also won two Youth Olympics silver medals.

Nada Hafez seven months pregnant while featuring at Paris 2024

Nada Hafez, who won two gold medals at the 2019 African Games, featured in her third Olympic Games at Paris 2024. She made her Summer Games debut at Rio 2016.

In the French capital, Hafez was knocked out in the second round of the women’s individual sabre competition.

The 26-year-old Egyptian fencer, however, revealed that she was seven months pregnant whilst competing at the ongoing Olympics.

Hafez took to social media to make the announcement, stating “This specific Olympics was different; Three times *Olympian* but this time carrying a little Olympian one!”

All parent athletes at Paris 2024, meanwhile, have been supported by a nursery on-site at the Olympic Village.

Novak Djokovic sets quarter-final date with Stefanos Tsitsipas

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic beat Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-3 in the men’s singles third round at the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Wednesday.

Djokovic, an Olympic bronze medallist, went past Beijing 2008 champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets in a blockbuster second round clash.

The top seed at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Djokovic will continue his quest for a maiden Olympic title against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, seeded eighth, in the quarter-final.

The Greek tennis ace has defeated Daniel Evans (GBR), Zizou Bergs (BEL) and Sebastian Baez (ARG) on his way to the last eight.

While the 37-year-old Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slam titles, Tsitsipas, 25, is a six-time Grand Slam semi-finalist.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, will take on USA's Tommy Paul, seeded ninth, in the last eight.

"Want to win third Olympic medal" - PV Sindhu after making the pre-quarters

India's badminton ace PV Sindhu breezed into the women's singles round of 16 at Paris 2024, following a 21-5, 21-10 victory against Estonia's Kristin Kuuba in her final Group M match today.

Sindhu is the only Indian badminton player to bag two Olympic medals - silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020. The 29-year-old Sindhu has a chance to become the first Indian to win three medals in individual events at the Olympics.

“I want that (to win a third medal). I feel really happy when people tell me - We want that medal from you," stated Sindhu.

"At the same time, it comes with a lot of responsibilities and pressure, but it's important for me to stay calm and keep going, one match at a time. I can’t expect easy wins. I’ll have to fight hard to earn that medal.”

Archery: Deepika Kumari mounts comeback after team event loss, makes individual round of 16

Indian archer Deepika Kumari, a former world No.1, won back-to-back women’s individual matches and secured a pre-quarterfinal spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Deepika, a four-time Olympian, beat Dutch archer Quinty Roeffen 6-2 in the round of 32 at the Les Invalides on Wednesday.

Playing her first Olympics since becoming a mother, Deepika took the first set but Roeffen levelled the scores in the second. The Indian archer, however, outscored her opponent in the next two sets to seal the victory.

India, notably, had lost to the Netherlands in the women's team archery event at Paris 2024, where both archers took aim.

Earlier in the day, Deepika, seeded 23rd, edged a closely contested match 6-5 against Estonia’s Reena Parnat in the round of 64.

The two archers could not be separated after five sets, where Deepika fought back with three consecutive 10s to send the match into a shoot-off. While the two-time Estonian notched an eight in the shoot-off, Deepika scored nine to take the contest.

Deepika will go up against German archer Michelle Kroppen, a team event bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, in the women's individual archery pre-quarterfinal on Saturday, August 3 at 1:52 PM IST.

India's Bhajan Kaur, will also feature in the women's round of 16 on Saturday, taking on Diananda Choirunisa, a two-time Asian Games medallist, at 2:05 PM IST.

Deepika Kumari (IND) beat Quinty Roeffen (NED) 6-2 in the women’s individual round of 32 archery match. Deepika made the pre-quarterfinals.

Shooting: Women’s trap duo stumble in qualification round

Indian shooters Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh, who began the women’s trap qualification event yesterday, failed to make the cut-off for the final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The duo made their Olympic debut at the French capital.

Rajeshwari and Shreyasi, both, totalled 113/125 after five rounds to rank 22nd and 23rd, respectively. The top six shooters advanced to the final.

Meanwhile, Rajeshwari’s 25/25 in the third round was the only time an Indian shooter registered a perfect score in the women’s trap qualification event at Paris 2024.

Score: Rajeshwari Kumari finished 22nd and Shreyasi Singh was ranked 23rd in the women’s trap shooting qualification round.

Boxing: Lovlina Borgohain punches her way to quarters

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain opened her Paris 2024 Olympics in style, beating Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad 5:0 in the women’s 75kg round of 16 bout on Wednesday.

Borgohain, a 69kg bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, is seeded eighth in her maiden 75kg Olympic tournament.

Making her Summer Games debut, the 20-year-old Hofstad adopted an aggressive approach in the first two rounds. Lovlina, 27, however, was resolute in defence, smothering her opponent’s punches, while countering back with a smile on her face.

The Norwegian boxer improved in the third round but it wasn’t enough to outscore the reigning Asian Games silver medallist.

Borgohain will go up against Li Qian of the People’s Republic of China, who beat the Indian boxer for the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou last year.

The Lovlina Borgohain vs Li Qian women’s 75kg quarter-final is scheduled for Sunday, August 4 at 3:02 PM IST. A victory for Borgohain would assure her the second medal of her Olympic career.

Table tennis: Sreeja Akula gives herself a birthday gift!

India’s Sreeja Akula brushed aside the challenge of Singaporean paddler Zeng Jian in the women’s singles round of 32 table tennis match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She joins compatriot Manika Batra, who is in action later today, in the pre-quarterfinals.

Akula, India’s top-ranked singles player, won 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10 in 51 minutes at the South Paris Arena on Wednesday.

Zeng Jian, seeded 31st, took the challenge to her higher-seeded opponent in the first two games, which were closely contested.

Celebrating her 26th birthday today, Akula, breezed past Zeng, winner of four medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, in the third and fourth games. While Zeng bounced back to win the fifth, Akula held her nerve to win the match.

Akula became only the second Indian table tennis singles player to make the round of 16 at the Olympics. She will face top seed Sun Yingsha at 12:30 AM tonight (Thursday).

Badminton: Lakshya Sen trumps Jonatan Christie for pre-quarters spot

Indian badminton ace Lakshya Sen upstaged Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie 21-18, 21-12 in the men’s singles Group L match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Sen, unseeded at the Summer Games, wrapped up the third seed Christie in 50 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena on Wednesday to secure a berth in the round of 16.

Despite the reigning All England champion starting from the favourable end and leading the first game 8-2, the 22-year-old Sen countered with high intensity to take the opener. The Indian badminton player, then, capitalized in the second to close out the match.

With two wins in two matches, Sen also topped the men’s singles Group L. He could face fellow countryman HS Prannoy, an Asian Games bronze medallist, in the round of 16.

The pre-quarterfinals, meanwhile, will start on Thursday, August 1.

From Game of Thrones to Paris 2024 gold, meet Daniel Wiffen!

Remember the The Rains of Castamere episode, known for the Red Wedding, from the Game of Thrones? The Stark family, along with the northern army, suffered many unexpected losses at the hands of Lord Walder Frey.

A future Olympic champion, notably, was on the set.

Daniel Wiffen, an Irish swimmer, was at the filming of the iconic episode, which aired in June 2013, as an extra with his twin brother. His sister, meanwhile, was one of the Frey daughters.

Eleven years later, Wiffen, now 23, won the gold medal in the men’s 800m freestyle event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Swimming at his second Olympic Games, Wiffen clocked 7:38.19 to shatter the Olympic record. It was previously held by Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk after a 7:41.28 swim at Tokyo 2020.

Shooting: Swapnil Kusale makes 50m rifle 3P final

Indian shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Swapnil Kusale featured in the men's 50m 3P qualification round at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.

Kusale, on his Olympic debut, advanced to the final after finishing seventh with a score of 590-38x. Tomar, on the other hand, was ranked 11th with a total of 589-33x. Only the top eight shooters from the qualification round made the final, scheduled for August 1 (tomorrow) at 1:00 PM IST.

Liu Yukun from the People's Republic of China, meanwhile, registered the Qualification Olympic Record with a total of 594-38x. He had also equalled the Qualification World Record of 597 last month in Munich.

Score: Swapnil Kusale (IND) finished seventh with a score of 590-38x and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar (IND) notched 589-33x in the men's 50m 3P qualification round. Kusale advanced to the final.

Badminton: PV Sindhu through to round of 16

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu beat Kristin Kuuba of Estonia 21-5, 21-10 in the women's singles Group M match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday. The Indian badminton player secured a place in the round of 16 with a victory today.

Sindhu, currently 13th in the BWF world rankings, bagged eight consecutive points to begin the first game against world No. 73 Kuuba. While the Estonian shuttler showcased more resistance in the second game, she was unable to match Sindhu's intensity. The two-time Olympic medallist won the match in 34 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena.

PV Sindhu could potentially face He Bingjiao, a Youth Olympics champion, in the pre-quarterfinal. Sindhu, notably, beat the People’s Republic of China’s He Bingjiao to secure her bronze in Tokyo.

Rowing: Balraj Panwar makes final D

Balraj Panwar clocked 7:04.97 to finish sixth in the men's singles sculls semi-final C/D at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.

Panwar, India's lone rower at the Summer Games, advanced to final D. The 25-year-old Army man's final Paris 2024 event is scheduled for Friday, August 2, at 1:48 PM IST.

The final D is a classification event (19th-24th), where no medals will be awarded.

Score: Balraj Panwar (IND) finished sixth in the men's singles sculls semi-final C/D with a time of 7:04.97.

Equestrian Anush Agarwalla to make historic dressage debut at Paris 2024

Anush Agarwalla will be the first Indian equestrian to compete in dressage at the Olympics. The 24-year-old, India's lone equestrian at Paris 2024, will make his Olympic debut today at 1:30 PM IST in Group E of the dressage individual qualifier.

Agarwalla will compete with his horse Sir Caramello Old, the same horse he rode at FEI events last year.

Last year, Agarwalla won India’s first individual medal, a bronze, at the Asian Games in dressage while helping India win the title in the team event.

Lovlina Borgohain, a Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist boxer in the 69kg category, will begin her women’s 75kg campaign today in the pre-quarterfinals. Boxer Nishant Dev, meanwhile, will fight in the men’s 71kg round of 16. Boxing events will start at 3:50 PM IST.

Table tennis ace Manika Batra, who secured India’s first-ever singles round of 16 berth at the Olympics, will focus on making the quarter-finals in Paris at 8:30 PM IST. Sreeja Akula, earlier in the day, will play her round of 32 match.

Shreyasi Singh and Rajeshwari Kumari will continue in the women’s trap qualification event. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, who won four medals at the Asian Games last year, and Swapnil Kusale will take aim in the 50m rifle 3P men’s qualification round at 12:30 PM IST.

Three badminton players - PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy - will take the court for their final group stage matches, starting at 12:50 PM IST, and play for round of 16 spots.

Rower Balraj Panwar will race in the men’s singles sculls semi-final C/D, a classification race. Anush Agarwalla, India’s only equestrian at Paris 2024, will make his Olympic debut.

Archers Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai will start their individual medal hunt from 3:56 PM IST.
