Paris 2024 Olympics equestrian, India’s schedule: Anush Agarwalla poised to ride into history
Anush Agarwalla will be the only Indian equestrian riding at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 24-year-old will compete in the individual dressage event, making him the first Indian to compete in dressage at the Summer Olympic Games.
In dressage competitions, the horse and rider perform a series of predetermined movements in an arena bordered by a low rail. The horse must stay within the area while performing.
Agarwalla will compete with his horse Sir Caramello Old at Paris 2024. The Indian equestrian also rode the same horse at FEI events last year.
The rider-mount duo achieved the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) four times to obtain a quota for India.
In 2023, Agarwalla, riding Etro, won India’s first individual medal at the Asian Games in dressage with a bronze. He also helped India claim the gold medal in team dressage in Hangzhou.
As the lone Indian rider at Paris 2024, Agarwalla will only be performing in individual dressage. The equestrian events at Paris 2024 will begin on July 26 at the Château de Versailles venue in Île-de-France.
Fouaad Mirza represented India in equestrian at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Earlier, Imtiaaz Anees (Sydney 2000), Indrajit Lamba (Atlanta 1996), Jitendrajit Singh Ahluwalia, Hussain Singh, Mohammed Khan and Darya Singh (all Moscow 1980) competed under the Indian flag at the Summer Games.
However, all took part in eventing competitions.
Equestrian was introduced as an Olympic discipline at Paris 1900. It has been a constant fixture in the Olympic programme since London 1908.
Germany have been the most successful country in equestrianism at the Olympics, winning 28 gold medals and 56 medals overall.
