Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen is one step away from a historic men’s singles badminton final at the Paris 2024 Olympics and he will take on defending Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on Sunday, August 3.

The high-profile semi-final between the reigning Commonwealth champion Sen and two-time world champion Axelsen will take place at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in Paris today and will begin at 3:30 PM.

The 22-year-old Sen, 22nd in the badminton rankings, beat 12th seed Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei 19-21, 21-15, 21-12 in a physically taxing quarter-finals on Friday.

He had earlier beaten reigning All England champion Jonatan Christie as well as higher-ranked compatriot HS Prannoy at Paris 2024.

Sen, who has already made history by becoming the first Indian male badminton player to enter the semis of an Olympics, will look to assure himself of a medal by directly qualifying for the final. A loss here, however, will keep him in contention for the bronze medal match.

The Indian hockey team, ranked fifth, will face world No. 2 Great Britain in the quarter-finals of field hockey at the Yves du Manoir Stadium on Sunday and the match will get underway at 1:30 PM.

Eight-time Olympic champions India will feel confident after beating the Australian hockey team for the first time in 52 years in their last group-stage encounter. The side, led by Harmanpreet Singh, won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will look to match or better that performance.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain is one step away from a second Olympic medal and she will face two-time Olympic medallist Li Qian of the People’s Republic of China in the women’s 75kg boxing quarter-final. Her bout is scheduled at 3:02 PM.

In athletics, Parul Chaudhary will be looking for an improved performance in women’s 3000m steeplechase after failing to qualify for the women’s 5000m final on Friday despite recording a season’s best.

Long jumper Jeswin Aldrin will also be involved in the athletics events that will take place at the Stade de France.

Meanwhile, the action in golf resumes with both Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar teeing up for round 4 at the Albatros course, Le Golf National just outside Paris. Sailors Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan will also be involved on the fourth day of their respective competitions at the Marseille Marina.

The women’s skeet qualification, which began on Saturday, will see India’s Raiza Dhillon and Maheshwari Chauhan trying to make it to the final which will be played on the same day.
