Eminent Indian sportspersons, including Abhinav Bindra and PV Sindhu, came together on social media to celebrate Olympic Day 2023 and called for a more active and healthy lifestyle.
The Olympic Day, celebrated every year on June 23 since 1948, commemorates the revival of the Olympic Games in Paris on June 23, 1894. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was officially formed on the same day.
Every year, the day is celebrated with a new theme. The theme for 2022 Olympic Day was ‘Together, For a Peaceful World’. This year, it is ‘Let's Move’, which aims to inspire people around the world to make time for daily physical activity.
Shooter Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual gold medallist at the Olympics, shared the video of him performing two of his favourite exercises - lunges and the plank. The former shooter stressed the importance of movement and exercise in day-to-day life.
“Adding 30 minutes of physical activities of any form can have immense benefits for your overall health. Put that time in your daily schedule for yourself. Let’s Move!” Abhinav Bindra said.
PV Sindhu, India’s most successful badminton player, showcased some stretching exercises on a special 30-minute video made by the Olympics.com team.
Hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played a crucial role in helping India win a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, emphasised the importance of exercising daily. He stated that consistent effort, even in small doses, can lead to significant improvements in overall fitness and performance.
Olympic bronze medallist boxers Lovlina Borgohain and Mary Kom, Commonwealth Games 2022 badminton champion Lakshya Sen, India’s former women’s hockey captain Rani Rampal and hockey player Navjot Kaur also joined in to celebrate Olympic Day 2023.
Olympic Day is a celebration of sport, health, and being together. This year, the IOC has partnered with the World Health Organisation to highlight the positive impact of sports on both physical and mental health.
“We want to inspire the world to move more every day. Sport and physical activity are the low-cost, high-impact tool for healthy bodies and healthy minds and resilient communities," IOC president Thomas Bach said.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) organised a short marathon in the Indian capital New Delhi in the presence of IOA president PT Usha to mark Olympic Day 2023.
The Olympic Day 2023 is also being celebrated across several schools in India.
