A high school soccer team in New York City, USA, and their unprecedented success against the odds are the inspiration behind the Olympic Channel’s newest original series: We Are King.
The six-part documentary, launched on Tuesday (19 November), traces the story behind New York's Martin Luther King High School football team and how, despite coming from some of the toughest neighbourhoods in the American city, its players and coaches continue to find ways to win.
Since 1997, MLK High School in Manhattan has won 19 championships, a record unmatched in the history of the state. They remain the only public school nationwide to be ranked inside the top 10 according to Prep Soccer.
As they go for their 20th championship in 25 years, We Are King tracks the team through the season, dipping into the lives of the young players and their coaches to reveal some of the harsh realities they must face away from the game.
In each episode, viewers are introduced to some of the key characters on the team including super-pro prospect Carlos Lainez, man of the house Maynor Palacios, aspiring rapper David Reyes, and hot-headed goalie Raymond Romero. From helping to support their families to navigating professional contract offers from overseas, every player’s challenges are different, but each individual must work to overcome them if they are to deliver another winning season as a team, under coach Martin 'Jake' Jacobson.
The series is available to watch now for free on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and on the official Olympics apps.
