Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Bethany Shriever and Niek Kimmann were back in familiar territory on Saturday (24 September) as they took home the gold medals in Round 5 at the 2022 UCI BMX Racing World Cup in Bogota, Colombia and crucially earned points for their NOCs in the UCI BMX Racing Olympic ranking.
European and Olympic champion Shriever of Great Britain won the women's elite round, edging out the Netherlands' Laura Smulders and Olympic silver medallist Alise Willoughby to the top of the podium.
"I had a great gate and I knew someone would be on me and I had to keep precise," Shriever said moments after the pulsating race. "My legs are killing me, almost like the Olympics. I want to dedicate this to my coach Marcus."
There was a similar theme in the final race of the evening as Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Kimman of the Netherlands returned to his first World Cup race in 16 months with a masterful performance. The 26-year-old took the win out of gate 8 and beat USA's Cameron Wood (second) and France's Sylvain Andre (third) to gold.
"Mentally these races are tough," Kimmann said after the race, barely able to catch his breath. "You need to really want it to have any chance to win. The real hunger was there. It's good to be back."
