After achieving her dream – and making history in the process – Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour is back in action this week, set to compete at the Swiss Cup on Saturday (9 November) in Zurich.
The 17-year-old struck gold at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 earlier this year, soaring to the uneven bars title and securing her nation’s first women’s gymnastics win. Her gold medal also represents a first for any gymnast from Africa.
"I still can't believe I've achieved the dream of my sporting life. I feel like there's still more to come,” she told Olympics.com in Paris.
The Swiss Cup will be her first step – and her post-Paris competitive return – on what’s to come in her young career, which also includes a historic silver medal on the uneven bars at the 2023 World Championships.
Nemour says a second Olympic Games at LA 2028 is her ultimate goal.
"I'm going to start training again, continue competing for my club and for Algeria, hoping to go all the way to 2028. That's the aim of starting an Olympic cycle again," she said.
And despite her historic triumph, Nemour feels there is much more to be accomplished.
“I can do something on beam and in the all-around too,” she said. “We fought [the all-around final] out for third place with three or four gymnasts, so I think I can do it. I've still got four years to perfect my skills, and then I'll have the experience of my first Olympic Games, so I'm hoping for the best.”
It’s all part of a legacy she hopes to leave for Algerian gymnastics. The first, but she hopes, not the last.
“I think I inspire the little girls who see me every day on videos and in competitions, and I'm happy to pass on my passion to them through my gymnastics,” said Nemour.
