Norway have run out 36-19 winners in the women's handball bronze medal match, with an impressive victory over Sweden.
The Norwegian team, who have finished on the podium at the last four Olympics, dominated proceedings at the Yoyogi National Stadium to secure their second Olympic bronze medal in as many editions of the Games.
Norway have been a powerhouse of handball for the last three decades and - after their bronze today (8 August) - have claimed the most women's handball medals in Olympic history. They won gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, silver at Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992, and bronze at Sydney 2000, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
After losing their semifinal matchup against ROC by a slender 27-26 margin, Norway were forced to dig deep to come back stronger in the bronze medal match.
"We win, very well-deserved, but it's a bittersweet feeling," said Norway's Nora Moerk. We played really well today and we lose one match at these Olympics and we still weren't best when it really mattered. It's bitter, but I'm also very proud of this group and the way we stand up again. There was a readjustment needed to be done and there was a couple of nights with little sleep."
Kari Brattset Dale, who also goes home with a bronze medal, said: "There have been ups and downs, for sure. We were really down after the semifinal and we did a fantastic job together to work ourselves back up for this bronze-medal final. I am so proud of this medal. This team is amazing."
