The 2023 New York City Marathon organisers have announced a star-studded women's elite field for this year’s race.

Olympic gold medallist Peres Jepchirchir, defending New York Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi, reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, and women's marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei will line up against each other for the first time in the history of the race.

Lokedi made her marathon debut in last year’s New York City Marathon, where she pulled away in the last two miles to win the race in 2:23:23.

Since then, the Kenyan middle and long-distance runner has been struggled with an injury for most of the year, but she still has high expectations for the 2023 NYC marathon in “The Big Apple".

“Last year, I came into the TCS New York City Marathon with the goal of being in the thick of the race, and the result was better than I could have ever hoped for. This year, I’m returning with a different mindset, hungry to defend my title and race against the fastest women in the world,” Lokedi said in a New York Road Runners press release.

The 2021 New York Marathon winner and Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir finished third in the London Marathon earlier this year, and she is aiming to win in NYC again after a hip injury prevented her from participating in last year’s race.

“I was so disappointed that I couldn’t defend my title in New York last year due to an injury, and winning again in Central Park has been my main motivation as I begin my preparations for the autumn. New York is an important step in defending my Olympic gold medal next summer in Paris, and I will do my best to make my family and my country proud,” Jepchirchir said.

The New York Marathon was held for the first time in 1970. In 2023 the race takes place on Sunday 5 November along its traditional 42km (26.3 miles) route through all five boroughs of New York City, USA.
