Reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the Diamond League finals 2024 in the men’s javelin throw competition after finishing fourth in the overall standings. The rankings were updated following the conclusion of the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday.
Despite not competing in Zurich, the two-time Olympic medallist accumulated 14 points across two Diamond League meets this season. Chopra finished second in both the Doha leg in May and the Lausanne event last month.
The Diamond League Finals 2024 will be held in Brussels, Belgium on September 13 and 14. A total of six athletes will compete in the men’s javelin throw final on September 14.
Chopra will face stiff competition in Brussels and look for his first major trophy of the 2024 athletics season. The Tokyo Olympics champion finished with the silver at Paris 2024.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who won the bronze medal at Paris 2024, and Germany’s Julian Weber are in the top two with 29 and 21 points, respectively, in the Diamond League standings. Czechia’s Jakub Vadlech is third with 16 points.
Republic of Moldova’s Andrian Mardare (13 points) and Japan’s Genki Dean (12 points) complete the top six.
Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the Paris 2024 Olympics gold medallist, competed just once in the Diamond League this year and thus did not make the cut for the final.
Neeraj Chopra had won the Diamond League Final in 2022 and was a runner-up to Jakub Vadlech in 2023.
Chopra set a national record of 89.94 at the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League in 2022 and landed his career’s second-best of 89.49m at the Lausanne meet last month. His silver-winning effort in Paris was an impressive 89.45 metres!
